Next stop on the Bluray train… Nourin Vol. 1&2!!

Encoder’s note after the break.

In other news, we’re hiring! If helping to make subtitles appear like magic sounds like something you might want to do, head over to our recruitment page to get started.

The 720p is 4:4:4. Why is this important and why haven’t we done this before? NGNL relies a lot on the chroma (colors) to keep a sharp image because the edges are colored red. Some of you may already know this but the yv12 standard means that the luma (greyscale) is full size (1080p) and the chroma half the size of the luma (540p). Hence, making a 720p version means downscaling the chroma to 360p. For a show like NGNL, this can be fatal. See here for an example: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/91244

Why don’t we do this for 1080p as well? Because the video renderer will turn convert everything to RGB by default to be displayed onto your Monitor, so making 1080p 4:4:4 would waste space compared to 720p where we would save quite a significant amount of detail just by using 4:4:4.

Why don’t you guys do this for every 720p release? NGNL is an exception because it relies heavily on the chroma compared to traditional animation styles where the edges would be black. This means not a lot would be gained from encoding in 4:4:4 for other releases. It would only waste space and processing time.
